Rating Breakdown
Why Is N1 Tofu Litter So Popular?
N1 uses food-grade soybean residue β a byproduct of tofu production β with no chemical additives. It's safe even if your cat ingests a bit. The headline feature: it's flushable. Scoop, drop it in the toilet, and you're done. No more stashing bags of used litter by the door.
Head-to-Head: N1 vs. the Competition
We tested N1 against four other popular brands: pidan, Tail Life, Lidu, and Jieke.
Clumping Performance
We poured 30ml of water to simulate urination and timed how fast each litter formed a scoopable clump.
N1 Result: Lightning fast β tight clumps formed in 3β5 seconds. Firm enough to scoop cleanly without crumbling, though the edges occasionally left a few loose granules behind.
Odor Control
We assessed odor after two days of use in a covered litter box.
N1 Result: The original (unscented) version has a mild soybean scent that helps neutralize ammonia. It's decent but not stellar. If odor control is a priority, go for the activated charcoal or green tea version β the difference is significant.
Dust Test
We poured each litter onto black card stock to check for airborne dust.
N1 Result: Outstanding β virtually no visible dust cloud. This is N1's biggest strength and makes it an excellent choice for cats (and humans) with respiratory sensitivities.
Flushability Test
We dropped used clumps into a toilet and timed dissolution.
N1 Result: Clumps broke apart within 1β2 minutes. But only flush 1β2 clumps at a time to avoid clogs β the "flushable" claim assumes reasonable use.
What We Love
- βNear-zero dust β excellent for cats with respiratory issues
- βFast, firm clumping that doesn't fall apart when scooping
- βFlushable and biodegradable β no more garbage bags of used litter
- βMade from natural tofu byproduct β safe if ingested
- βCompetitively priced for the quality
What Could Be Better
- βOriginal unscented version has average odor control β spring for the activated charcoal variant
- βCan grow bacteria in humid environments β needs frequent changing
- βSome cats dislike the texture under their paws
- βLarge bags need to be stored in a dry place to prevent spoilage
π― The Bottom Line
N1 is the benchmark for flushable tofu litter β excellent clumping, near-zero dust, and a fair price. If your cat is comfortable with the soybean texture, it's a rock-solid choice. Pair it with a covered box and change it regularly for the best results.
